Clay bar is the process of removing contaminants from the paint work that were not removed from the cleaning process using a synthetic poly clay. Rubbing the clay bar over the bodywork lifts any bonded particles and leaves a silky smooth surface in preparation for either a polish or wax.
A specific clay lubricant must be used before using the clay as this will prevent the clay from inflicting any damage as it runs across the paint. Make sure to use a soft micro fibre towel to wipe off any excess lubricant after the panel has been completed.
You will be able to see the removed contaminants on the clay bar, and once the bar has become dirty it can be folded and reshaped to reveal a fresh section.
It is important to clay your car before any polish, wax or paint correction as if any bonded contaminants are left on the surface prior to this stage the particles will be drawn back into the paint and may cause further scratches.
It may be difficult to see if your car needs a clay bar with the naked eye, however if you run your hand gently over a dried clean car, and it feels rough to touch then it requires a clay bar. Once completed the surface should feel smooth to the touch. Generally you should clay your car every time you want to apply a polish or wax.
The car should be rewashed and rinsed after claying to remove any residue.
